French film school’s music teacher jailed

A French film teacher has been jailed for two years after he pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

Queensland Police said a 23-year-old man from Paris was arrested in October 2014 after an investigation into child exploitation on his computer.

A court heard the man had admitted he had downloaded images of children and that the images were “of sexual and emotional nature”.

The man pleaded guilty on the advice of his lawyer.

Police allege the man uploaded the images on his home computer to his personal server, where he used them to “exploit” young children in his care.

In one of the images, a boy is seen having sex with a girl, the court heard.

“I did not upload the images to the server as a means of accessing the child pornography, but as a way to explore and indulge myself in sexual acts with children,” the man told police.

Prosecutor Paul Tully told the court the man was also involved in a number of online chat rooms and had used a fake name to chat with young children.

He told the jury that the man, who has been living in France, admitted to downloading child pornography and that he knew the images he had viewed were child pornography because they were “inappropriate”.

“He had downloaded the images and the images had been downloaded and shared with other people and had been accessed on his personal computer,” Mr Tully said.

The court heard police were able to trace the man to a home in Southport in February, when he allegedly downloaded a number in the area of 100 images.

Detective Senior Sergeant James Edwards said the man’s conduct did not fit the profile of someone who was known to be a paedophile.

Assistant Commissioner John Anderson told the sentencing hearing that the victim’s mother was “devastated” by the case and the judge called for the man and his victim to “learn the consequences” of their actions.

Magistrate Mary McArthur handed down the two-year jail term suspended for a year and ordered the man not to contact the victim or any other child for three years.
